Well it's high time I give this CineJax blog a little attention. I must admit, I lost most of my interest in posting here because I made the process too difficult. I always wanted to have a YouTube video attached to the posts, but at the time, it took too much effort to get that done (or at least I didn't know enough to make it easy). I also wanted to have a rating system so I could remember and relate my thoughts to my readers. In general I just put too many caveats on the process. For fawks sake, it's just ANOTHER movie blog that 2 people read and no one cares about, so why all the fuss?

Now things have changed a bit. I've added an iPhone to the mix so I can post from anywhere, anytime, with much less effort. I'm also using Posterous to post to any or all of my blogs and social networking sites. Using Posterous has really made things much easier for me. Not only can I post to any source, they also make posting pictures and movies hella easy. So now I won't have to do much work to get a YouTube video attached to each post.

With that said, I had another reason for lighting the fire under this blog. The TripJax family has started family night on Sunday's, where we watch a new (to us) movie and scarf down some popcorn, candy and soda's. With the new HDTV, it's like being in the theater without the $40 tab. And since I recently landed Showtime, Cinemax and The Movie Channel for $5 TOTAL a month for the next 24 months, I have a feeling we won't even have to visit Blockbuster very often. The DVR will definitely be my friend again.

With all the above duly noted, let's get to my first movie posted here in quite a while. We had to switch family movie night to tonight, so this one is fresh on my mind....

The Tale Of Despereaux

I gotta say I really dug this movie. For a kids movie, it had it all, except for one appreciated omission that I'll get to in a moment. For starters, this movie really kept my interest from the beginning. The main character, obviously Despereaux, was extremely likable and made you really want to keep up with him throughout.

Also the movie had the bulk of what, at least my kids, love to see in a movie. A bad guy, valiant knight (ish) and a princess who needs help. Toss in a great supporting cast, a good story line and a job well done by the Director and his crew and you've got a recipe for success.

Oh and the appreciated omission, you ask? This movie didn't try to knock your socks off with comedy at all. In fact, I only recall laughing a couple of times and I really don't think they were parts where they were trying too hard for a laugh. Sometimes animated tales can include attempts at humor that does one of three things - 1) only caters to the kids, 2) only caters to the adults; or, 3) just isn't very funny. It was nice to see them go for something different with this one and just offer an interesting tale that seemed to keep everyone in our family interested.

If I had to put a rating on this one, I'd give it a 4 out of 5.

Okay that is it for now. Don't expect most of my posts going forward to be this long. I usually won't have much time to post, so I'll give you the quickie version of my thoughts.

Posted via email from CineJax
TripJaxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02883671728514946477noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7551303162808553854.post-41421403212186353772008-09-09T14:13:00.000-07:002008-09-09T14:18:11.961-07:00OldBoyBack in 2004 I started reading Joblo, which is a movie review site. It's technically more than just reviews, but that's the primary reason I visited the site. On occasion my thoughts on a movie would differ, but for the most part I agreed with much that he wrote. One of the first sections on the site that caught my eye back then was the Top 10 Films list he made available every year.

In 2004 his #1 movie was OldBoy a Korean flick that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. Something about reading his review really got me interested in trying to watch it as soon as possible. Unfortunately it had yet to be released in the US, so getting my hands on a copy would not be easy. I resolved to just give it time to make its way to the US and then snatch it up.

Years went by and I completely forgot about the movie. It wasn't until I read Dragonystic's post about the movie that my interest was rekindled. From there I started checking the local stores, but still didn't have any luck. My sister-in-law was working at a local bookstore that bought and sold movies, so I asked her to be on the look out. This past weekend, nearly 9 months later, she brought me the DVD with a smile on her face. Apparently a dude had brought in a shit ton of books, dvd's and cd's to try and sell. Thanks dude.

Last night I watched the movie and must admit it is great; I really, really enjoyed the entire movie. I didn't come away with quite the emotion that Dragon did, but I understand why he did and can see the reasons why it could happen, especially depending on your emotions at the time of the viewing. I was hooked from beginning to end, which makes for a great viewing in my mind.

Something about the villain, Woo Jin-Lee, hooked me in to the movie completely; not to mention the great acting by Dae-Su and pretty much every character from what I can recall.

I definitely recommend giving this one a spin if you manage to find a copy. I would imagine it is available on NetFlix for those with a membership. One quick word of warning...DO NOT watch the movie using the American dubbed voices. It 100% destroys the feel for the movie hearing American voices dubbed over the characters. I watched the movie with subtitles first and then wanted to see how the dubbed version would be, so I fired it up at the end. The dubbing takes a beautifully crafted, downright mesmerizing movie and turns it into a joke. And I guarantee if we try and remake the movie completely for the American market, we'll fuck that up too.

I plan to cross post this at CineJax also, since I rarely post there anymore and this is technically a movie post.

Until next time, may the felt be with you. TripJaxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02883671728514946477noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7551303162808553854.post-11456075140403887242008-03-28T18:06:00.000-07:002008-03-28T18:30:47.362-07:00Horton Hears a Who!
Viewed: 03.22.08
Theater/DVD/Cable: Theater
Overall Review: 3.5 out of 5

Plot:
Horton the Elephant struggles to protect a microscopic community from his neighbors who refuse to believe it exists.

Memorable Quote:
"I wonder what ASAP means anyways. Jim Carrey and Steve Carell do a terrific job as the voices of Horton the elephant and the Mayor of Whoville. I guess it takes an animated character to tone down Carrey a bit. Or maybe it's just old age catching up with him.

The animation is fantastic in that it's just silly enough to be great 3D, but also make the Seuss characters shine. You really feel like the book comes to life. This is much better than previous live costume attempts like 'The Cat in the Hat' (which was so bad I never actually saw it) and another Carrey film 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas'. Animation is the way to go in my opinion.

It's hard to take a short story and turn it into a full length feature, but aside from a couple of strange editing choices I think the film was just long enough. I can't really understand the Japanese Anime scene somewhere in the middle. It was so out of place and was pretty scary to a little kid. But the rest of the film was adorable and made everyone laugh at the right spots.

There aren't many choices when it come to G-rated films these days and when you want to take a 3-year old to the movies, Horton is a fantabulous choice. And it's fun for the adults in the family too.

Don't forget to check out the trailer in the player below.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7551303162808553854.post-80702391365916831432008-03-22T18:09:00.000-07:002008-03-22T15:10:29.803-07:00Master and Commander: The Far Side of the WorldViewed: 03.20.08
Medium: Hulu
Overall Review: 3.5 out of 5

Plot:
The Brits and the French break bad in the middle of the ocean with Napoleon's boys sailing in a far superio ship. Rum induced hilarity ensues (not really).

Memorable Quote:
"Do you want to call that raggedy-ass Napoleon your King?!"

My Thoughts:
First off, I want to mention how I watched this movie. I noted in a recent post over at TripJax that I've been getting into Hulu. Hulu is a place to watch free movies and tv shows without having to download anything or even sign-up for an account. The catch is you just have to watch a couple of short commercials spread out through the movie or show. Pretty f'ing cool if you ask me.

Moving on to the movie at hand. I have to say, I really enjoyed Master & Commander. I'm a sucker for movies that have that Epic feel. I also digs me a period piece where a little part of history is detailed in an exciting way. This movie hit on all cylinders factoring in those things.

I admit I don't think this was Russell Crowe's best showing, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. He and the actor who played the ships doctor worked well together and pretty much made the movie for me. I also enjoyed how authentic everything looked. Nothing ever felt contrived or out of place. Nothing ever blew me away or left me with my eyes wide open, but I enjoyed the movie for keeping me intrigued from start to finish.

Considering this movie is nearly 5 years old, you can probably get it pretty cheap if you decide you want to check it out. I saw it at Walmart for $5, but once I saw I could watch it for free, I figured I would just go that route. I love watching movies on my laptop as I'm completely focused and can hear every detail with my headphones on.

Remember, you can always watch the trailer via the embedded video player below. The big and small companies attempt a merger, but are investigated by the gubment prior to the deal going down. Stuff gets blown up, corruption rears its ugly head and hilarity ensues.

Memorable Quote:
"In this town you're innocent until you're investigated."

My Thoughts:
Okay strike that last part in the above Plot section about hilarity ensuing. This was a very serious movie that was much deeper than I expected. On at least three occasions I clicked back a few minutes to soak up a scene again and make sure I understood before moving on.

A quick thought about the production before I get to the goods. Sometimes I watch a movie and wonder how they could afford to make it. As I watched this film it came across as a pretty expensive one to make. Yet I don't recall it getting a ton of press or theater time. I bought the DVD last year when Walmart was selling it for $5.00 then immediately shelved it. I just don't get the feeling it made mad dollars overall, but who knows. I never really gave watching it much of a thought until recently. I'm glad I did.

I enjoyed the actors in their roles. Everyone seemed to somehow fit perfectly in their skin. The plot was interesting because it felt real to me. Oil is big business and, for many, it is life. The essence of this movie is that oil runs the world and there are so many players and actions behind the scene that most of us take for granted. This movie gives you a chance to experience this corrupt, cut-thoat business first hand.

The only drawback I could find was this flick is almost too deep. It goes in so many different directions it is hard to keep up. There were some characters that, after 2 hours of watching the movie, I still couldn't remember their name or completely understand their role.

If you can handle a serious movie about the corrupt big business of oil, then gives Syriana a spin. You can probably find it for $5 at your local Walmart. I am also going to introduce you to my latest way of watching movies - torrents. I find it much nicer to watch movies on flights on my 14" laptop than on the tiny plane screens.

Now that we got that out of the way, let's talk about this incredible film. Nominated for 8 academy awards and won a total of 4 including best director, best screenplay and best supporting actor. That last one I don't completely understand, because it seems that Javier Bardem's character was what the movie was about and he was the lead role. I guess I don't know my movies enough. The academy can wait.

The movie is truly terrific. It keeps you at the edge of your seat throughout and you just don't know who's going to die next and how. It is kind of gory and brutal, but done in a very good way. The writing is very good as is the acting by all the characters. I especially enjoy films with Tommy Lee Jones. Something about his voice, I think. Woody Harrelson has a great part as well. Josh Brolin plays a great role, but OMG - I think he either has the biggest head of any human alive or the smallest body attached to a gigantic head.

The true brilliance is Javier, though. First of all, you have to admire someone who was willing to live with that haircut for the duration of filming. I've seen people refer to it as the Snoopy Ears cut and someone even suggested that for his next role they need to give him an even worse do, just to mess with him. I would not mess with the guy after seeing this movie though. You just knew it was all going to go horribly wrong after he strangles the cop at the beginning of the movie.

So just to summarize, Best Motion Picture of the Year.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7551303162808553854.post-10037623855288500332007-08-05T12:49:00.000-07:002008-03-01T10:58:34.789-08:00DreamgirlsViewed: 06.07.07
Theater/DVD/Cable: Plane
Overall Review: 2.5 out of 5

Plot:
Eddie Murphy and Jamie Foxx are the perfect complement to Beyonce, Jennifer Hudson and Anika Noni Rose in this film version of the Broadway smash, which has garnered three Golden Globes and two Oscars.

Memorable Quote:
"Jimmy want a rib! All I can say for myself is that I was bored, it was a long flight and I had seen everything else worth watching.

So to sum it up in one word: Overrated. I mean, seriously, what was all that hoopla about? Jennifer Hudson was worthy of an Oscar? Maybe if there was a "Best Female Lead Over-Actor" category. The Oscars are a sham anyway so I guess I shouldn't really put too much into it. But she also won a Golden Globe. Beyonce was a total waste of celluloid. Maybe the critics watched a different film.

The one I watched had a lot of singing (not all good), moved at a pretty slow pace, was extremely predictable and quite boring. I enjoyed Eddie Murphy's performance in it and Jamie Foxx did a great job too, but the girls were definitely no dream.

I want to say something about this awful trend of cross-over Hollywood-Broadway films. None of them are worth watching and they are usually extremely boring. Chicago was no fun to watch on the silver screen or on stage. Hairspray was a great movie that was an OK Broadway show that is now a movie again? The producers was a great movie that was an excellent show that was an awful movie.... I could find some other examples but you get the idea. What happened to originality? Why do we have to get this regurgitated crap all the time? Rant over. It is a great action thriller with a lot of plot twists that really make you think. The acting is superb from all the lead and supporting characters and you are on the edge of your seat the entire time. If you liked the space-time continuum scenarios of the 'Back to the Future' trilogy, you're going to love this movie.

I always have a hard time getting into a Denzel film for some reason. He is terrific in almost every role he plays but maybe because he is so good every time, I find it difficult to see him as a different character. But this movie just grabs you straight from the start and you can't wait to see what happens in the next scene and how the mystery will be solved.

Tony Scott is a pure movie genius and every movie he makes is a must see for me. Ever since the early days of 'Top Gun' and 'Days of Thunder' he has churned out excellent big Hollywood action blockbusters.

I think the only reason this movie did not top the $64M at the box-office was the way it was marketed. This is a must see in my opinion.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7551303162808553854.post-73768089249015596442007-07-30T11:53:00.000-07:002008-03-01T10:58:11.591-08:00Casino RoyaleViewed: 06.07.07
Theater/DVD/Cable: Plane
Overall Review: 3 out of 5

Plot:
Bond is back and he's tougher than ever. I guess with the popularity of poker these days they had to make the switch from the old-school Baccarat, but this was truly pathetic. Anyone playing in that game would scream foul pretty quickly and the Montenegro Gaming Commission would have to be called in to review the tapes to figure out how a cold deck was introduced into the game.

Yes, they still have the hot girl and they still have the fancy fast cars. Yes, it's a little dark at times and you do get a sense for the action. But it's either a little too over the top and a little too unbelievable to really grab you and get you hooked. The funny thing is I actually watched parts of it on my laptop and the version on the plane was censored pretty heavily, so maybe I didn't get the full experience. I did fall asleep a few times and ended up having to rewind and watch some parts several times until I made it the whole way through.

And I still got a pain in my nether-regions after a certain scene. This movie shines a spotlight on one kind of horror (amongst the many others) that occur in Africa on daily basis. It is astonishing to me that the so-called "advanced" parts of the world are so materialistic that they almost always forget what happens just because someone wants to spend 3 months' pay on an engagement ring. The pain and suffering that go into the diamond trade are inexcusable and I think this movie will make more people think before they blindly pay the outrageous prices that jewelers demand.

This movie reminded me a little of 'The Killing Fields' (with a touch of 'Romancing the Stone' but without the romance). Especially the scenes with the children being brainwashed. These are the same tactics that were used by the Khmer Rouge and they are completely despicable. I had moments during the movie that I felt like punching the screen, but was afraid I would either break it or wake the person sitting in the seat in front of me.

So overall, I say this is a must-see and must-tell. The injustice in Africa has to be known and the word spread. Only by educating the masses will there be any hope to change the current situation.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7551303162808553854.post-3771559217296627162007-07-30T11:19:00.000-07:002008-03-01T10:57:35.976-08:00The Last KissViewed: 07.29.07
Theater/DVD/Cable: DVD
Overall Review: 2 out of 5

Plot:
Michael (Zach Braff) and Jenna (Jacinda Barrett) have been together for three years and have been thinking about getting married and starting a family. Seriously, the only reason I got this movie is because past Zach Braff movies were pretty good and the back of the DVD cover said this was a "hilarious, irresistibly genuine comedy". I don't know who wrote the cover but he was probably watching another movie.

This film was all about heartache, betrayal, anxiety and the art of hurting the ones you care for. It was full of cliches and not even trying to hide them. The characters are all taken out of standard overused situations and have no originality. The whole premise that Kim (the college co-ed) is attracted to Michael and is basically whoring it up is baseless and makes their relationship without any credibility.

The only highlight of the movie was the above mentioned quote. It a shame, really, because the movie had lots of potential. This is by far the best Adam Sandler role (surpassing his terrific 'Punch Drunk Love' character) and he deserves some kind of recognition for an amazing job. And Don Cheadle is always excellent and nails his role perfectly.

When I got back home and hugged my loved ones I told KajaWife about the movie and by the time I finished we were both in tears. You have to watch this movie. The problem is when and how? If you are already in a dark mood this might push you over the edge. If you're in a good mood, that will definitely change. Maybe just watch it by mistake, like I did, on a plane (yeah, not the best place to watch a post 9/11 flick). But find some time and watch it. Maybe when this country comes to grips with what happened here and starts treating 9/11 as a national day of mourning and memoriam will this movie be shown on a yearly basis on national television. But for now, just find a time and go see it. Jude Law doesn't get on my nerves like he usually does. And Jack Black is always good.

The plot line is easy to follow and goes by quickly enough. This movie was so intensely beautiful, yet so tragic. It grips at your heart and somehow makes you happy and sad at the same time.

It is not often a movie can be so dark and hopeless, yet magical and creepy. It is absolutely worth the price of admission to see it on the big screen. I will offer a few warnings however. First, the movie is subtitled, so prepare to do a fair amount of reading. If you aren't down with that type of movie, then move along.

Second, this movie is not some Harry Potter or The NeverEnding Story kidfest. While there are moments with fairys and such, at its core this movie is dark and, at times, disturbing. Finally, I think this movie is just different from your typical American movie. At times you can just tell it is a foreign film. I do not write this with negative intent. I think it is great that this movie is breaking into our market and I really applaud the producer for getting it done. It's easy with Del Toro's movies.

As a side note, I got my feet wet with the Del Toro movie, The Devil's Backbone, which I also loved (here is the youtube video for that movie). I'd seen the previews a few years back, but never had a chance to hit the theaters or rent the dvd. Back then, it fell off the map rather quickly, so i didn't expect to be blown away.

As I suspected, this one didn't exactly leave me amazed, but I will say I did enjoy it for what it was worth. The title is rather telling as this movie is indeed forgettable. I'm guessing that is why it didn't kill it in the theaters. However, I stayed focused during the movie and found parts of it rather interesting.

The movie takes an interesting turn in the latter parts, which for me was a relief. What starts as a rather boring movie about a potentially psychotic woman, turns all transcendental on us. This intersting plot twist, while not mind blowing, gave the movie just enough gusto to keep me interested.

On a side note, there was a pretty wicked car crash scene that reminded me of those commercials from VW for their GTI. You know the ones where people are just riding down the road talking random stuff and then, blammo, they are hit by another car. I wonder which came first, the movie or the commercials.

The Forgotten is forgettable, but worth a go if you've nothing better to do. If you are looking for a mind-blowing, thought provoking experience, you will be disappointed. However, if you are looking for a decent movie to break the monotony, this one may be your huckleberry.
TripJaxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02883671728514946477noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7551303162808553854.post-67087522995772338982007-01-24T10:36:00.000-08:002008-03-01T10:55:54.619-08:00High Roller: The Stu Ungar Story

Viewed: 1.23.07
Theater/DVD/Cable: Cable
Overall Review: 2 out of 5

Plot:
Lets follow little Stuey Ungar, the poker legend, from a kid to "the kid." I've read nothing but bad things about it, but I usually like to paint my own picture and decide for myself. I will admit I did not have high hopes when I clicked play on my DVR, but I was not completely disappointed.

Granted, this is no award winning movie (well maybe one award), but I didn't think it was as bad as people made it out to be. To be honest, there was a lot about this movie I did not like, but I stayed interested enough to see it through. Usually if I can't stomach a movie because it is so bad, I'll just shut it off or leave the theater.

If you're looking for things to critique in this movie, you'll have plenty to work with. The acting, production, directing and vision is less than appealing. And don't get me started on the soundtrack. It is truly horrid. Still, I found a way to give this movie a chance and I'm glad I did. Now I can at least say that I've seen the movie.

If you have high hopes for this flick, prepare to be disappointed. However, if you are looking to kill 2 hours of your life watching an okay movie, prepare to qualify. I rate this one as Forgettable, but worth watching if you have nothing better to do. I never plan to watch it again and will not own the dvd, but I'm glad I watched it once.
TripJaxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02883671728514946477noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7551303162808553854.post-31610221771402032592007-01-21T16:53:00.000-08:002008-03-01T10:54:28.772-08:00Monster House

Viewed: 1.21.07
Theater/DVD/Cable: DVD
Overall Review: 3 out of 5

Plot:
A neighborhood house is causing all kinds of havoc, eating toys, people and whatever else walks on its lawn. I had never heard of it until this afternoon. TripBoy and TripGirl stayed at Granny's house last night and they picked it up at the movie store so TripBoy would have something to watch. He watched it last night, but wanted me to watch it with him again today.

When they got home, I was about to fire up a poker game, but decided to shut down the computer after he asked if we could watchthe movie. He told me it was really scary and I might want to get a blanket to hide under. As it turns out, it was a little scary, but in a kid kind of way. I admit to jumping at least once when a scene caught me off guard. I've never heard of a childrens cartoon horror movie, but this one comes close. Think Toy Story, but scary.

As for the guts of this movie, I decided from the get go to take this for what it was...a chance to spend some time with boy and enjoy a simple movie. I'm really glad I did because we had a fun time huddling under the blanket waiting for the next scary thing to happen. He was definitely into this movie and I was caught up in his enthusiasm.

Now that I've gotten you into the idea of seeing this movie, let me throw a few warnings out there. This movie does not go deep. It will not knock your socks off or leave you ready to watch it again the next day. Take this movie for what it is...a kids movie with a couple of funny jokes and scary moments. If you start questioning plot holes and story lines, then you've missed the point. If you have a kid between the ages of 5 - 13, rent this movie and just have a good time with it. I did.

I give this one a 3 out of 5 as I had a good time with it. Had I not been with boy, it would probably drop some, but maybe not. I'm a simple guy and I take movies for what they are. This movie won't find its way in my DVD collection, but I'm guessing I'll have to buy it for the boy. That's cool with me.

TripJaxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02883671728514946477noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7551303162808553854.post-12386535881640750872007-01-06T22:17:00.000-08:002008-03-01T10:53:13.356-08:00Children Of Men

Viewed: 1.06.07
Theater or DVD: Theater
Overall Review: 4 out of 5

Plot:
The year is 2027 and the world is in dissaray due to the unexplained inability of women to reproduce for the last 18 years. It is not for everyone, but really pulled me in and had its way with me. I will admit, it is a slow paced movie that takes time to build up, but the last 30 minutes blew me away. The directing and vision were stellar throughout. I came into this movie expecting a low budget, artsy flick, but was really shown the goods. Clive Owen and Michael Caine did a great job in their respective roles.

Like I said, this one is definitely not for everyone, and probably isn't "date night" material, but it worked for both ChickJax and I.
